Empowering Sustainable Skills: Behind the Scenes of the PIECE DPP Training

In response to the fast-evolving demands of the EU’s circular economy and the battery value chain, the PIECE project has taken a significant step by developing a comprehensive training programme on Digital Product Passports (DPPs). This initiative, aimed at supporting the sustainable transformation of the battery sector, is the result of a methodical and collaborative development process—and it’s designed with learners in mind.

From Research to Actionable Training

The journey began with extensive desk research, followed by two targeted surveys—one addressing training organisations and another focusing on industry needs. These were complemented by a roundtable with external experts from both sectors, validating the findings and bringing clarity to the challenges and gaps in DPP implementation.

Key takeaways from this needs analysis highlighted a strong demand for training in regulatory compliance, environmental impact assessment, blockchain applications, and data security—all seen as critical for DPP adoption. The research also revealed that while some sectors (like IT) are more proactive, many others—especially manufacturing—are hesitant due to complexity and cost concerns.

Flexible, Modular, and Practical Learning

Based on this evidence, the PIECE consortium developed a modular training programme tailored to different experience levels, from beginner to advanced. The course is structured into three Competence Units, each offering 4 hours of content, and includes a pre-assessment tool to help learners assess their current knowledge and start at the right level. Participants will engage with interactive materials, including expert-led presentations, Q&A sessions, case studies, digital tools, and group discussions.

Whether you’re learning the fundamentals of DPPs or exploring how to integrate them into business operations, the course is designed to deliver real-world relevance. Key topics include:

  • Data ownership and sharing protocols
  • Passport label creation
  • EU regulatory landscape
  • Stakeholder collaboration
  • Predictive maintenance and innovation strategies
  • Security and compliance best practices

Learners who complete the course receive a certification, adding value to their professional development and reinforcing the importance of DPPs in building sustainable and transparent supply chains.

Pilots and Real-World Feedback

The training is currently being piloted across partner countries. For example, ASA is running an online pilot with 30 participants, building on feedback from a Train-the-Trainer (TTT) programme. This iterative approach ensures the material remains relevant, practical, and directly aligned with industry expectations.

What’s in It for Learners?

Participants gain:

  • A deep understanding of DPPs tailored to their current knowledge level
  • Access to certified training that enhances employability and sector-specific skills
  • Insights into the latest EU policies and technological tools
  • Flexible, self-paced learning that fits into professional routines
  • Real examples and case-based learning to apply knowledge immediately

The PIECE training is more than a course—it’s a strategic enabler for sustainable innovation. By equipping professionals with the right skills, it supports the battery sector’s transition and helps bring the EU’s circular economy vision to life. To learn more, visit the PIECE project website.
